Af-Range Download
Thank you for your interest in Af-Range. The collection provided includes programs built for use on Windows operating systems or other systems using a Windows emulator. If another version is needed, Af-Range may need recompiled from the source files, version 1.0, available on Github. The file linked below is in a compressed and archived format known as ZIP files. See the bottom of this page to learn more about ZIP files. Downloading some of the files may be blocked on some browsers and require you to confirm their download before you can proceed. Uncompress the files to make the software available. It is generally most straightforward to install the program with a folder with a brief name, with the root of a drive being most effective (e.g., C:\Af-Range\); very lengthy folder paths may cause errors. After uncompressing the file, edit the "Af-Range.ini" file in the \Af_Range\Af_Range_Bin folder to match the pathway you have used. For example, if you have installed the program on the root of the C drive, it would be C:\Af_Range\Af_Range. To test the installation, see if Af_Range.exe in the \Af_Range\Af_Range_Bin folder will execute. This archive contains all the files needed by Af-Range for an example application, plus all of the 11 compiled climate datasets. Note that the file is very large, about 8.4 GB. In the likely event that you don't need all 11 climate datasets, download the archive with Af-Range files only and individual climate sets that you may need, below. This file was current as of May 26, 2026. → Af-Range Ver. 1.0 ←Af-Range Files without Climate Surfaces
Because the all-included file is so large, users may have difficulty downloading it. Some users may wish to download the following file, which includes the same information as the larger file, except climate surfaces are removed. This file is 0.1 GB, but at least one climate surface dataset needs to be downloaded to allow Af-Range to run. → Af-Range Ver. 1.0 without Climate Surfaces ← Users who downloaded the fill archive do not need to download climate data. For those who downloaded the smaller file without climate surfaces, at least one climate surface dataset should be downloaded. Climate surface datasets may be uncompressed to, or copied to, the \Af_Range\Af_Range\Layers folder. For example, if the user wishes to use the ACCESS-ESM1-5 archive for Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) 3-7.0, they may download and extract the ACCESS_370 archive and then copy the collection to \Af_Range\Af_Range\Layers\ACCESS_370. Note that each of the files below is about 770 MB. The climate surface archives are: → ACCESS-ESM1-5 SSP 1-2.6 ←→ ACCESS-ESM1-5 SSP 3-7.0 ←
→ CMCC-ESM2 SSP 1-2.6 ←
→ CMCC-ESM2 SSP 3-7.0 ←
→ CNRM-CM6-1 SSP 1-2.6 ←
→ CNRM-CM6-1 SSP 3-7.0 ←
→ INM-CM5-0 SSP 1-2.6 ←
→ INM-CM5-0 SSP 3-7.0 ←
→ IPSL-CM6A-LR SSP 1-2.6 ←
→ IPSL-CM6A-LR SSP 3-7.0 ←
→ ACCESS-ESM1-5 SSP 1-2.6 with the first 20 years repeated to fill 1990 to 2100, damping climate change responses ←
A Python graphical user interface and several analysis tools are included in the Af-Range archives above. Their use will require a copy of Python 3.10 or higher be installed. Each tool uses some common libraries that need to be installed as well, such as the numpy package and xlsxwriter package. Their installation and use is discussed in a video provided. As cited above, if the source code is needed, version 1.0 may be downloaded from → Github ←.
Using ZIP files
Many files are stored in one larger file, and in a compressed format. When you click on the download link, you will be asked if you want to open the file or save it to your computer. Select Save and identify a location on your computer where you would like to store the file, then select Save. After the download is complete you may close the dialog box. Locate the file you saved and double-click it. The ZIP file will open. Most current computer operating systems know how to uncompress ZIP files, and will show you the contents of the ZIP file. Copy the contents to a location you select.
